Body Shape

There are four classic body shapes: the apple, the banana or straight, the hourglass, and the pear. The shapes are derived from three inflection points of the body: the hips, the waist, and the chest.

Measuring Body Shape Inflection Points

Measure and record your body inflection points. Below you will learn whaer and how to measure. These measurements will be needed for comparision to determine your body shape.

  • Chest is measured across the fullest part.
  • Waist is usually measured at the smallest circumference of the abdomen.
  • Hips are usually measured at the largest circumference of the hips and buttocks.

Determining Your Body Shape

Your body shape is determined by the relationship of the three inflection points. Read the descriptions below to determine what your body shape is.

Apple
The chest circumference is at least 110% of the hips circumference and the waist circumference is at most 75% of the chest circumference. Body fat distribution tends to begin in the arms, shoulders, chest and upper abdomen first.
Banana
The chest and hips circumferences are virtually the same and the waist measurement is at least 75% of them. Body fat is distributed predominantly around the waist.
Hourglss
The chest and hips circumferences are virtually the same and the waist circumference is less than 75% of the chest or hips circumferences. Body fat distribution tends to be around both the upper body and lower body.
Pear
The hips circumference is at least 110% of the chest circumference and the waist circumference is at least 75% of the chest circumference. Body fat distribution tends to deposit first in the buttocks, hips and thighs. As body fat percentage increases, an increasing proportion of body fat is distributed around the waist and upper abdomen.
